Onderzoek van Harvard psycholoog Matthew Killingsworth liet zien dat mensen gemiddeld 47% van de tijd qua aandacht niet aanwezig zijn bij wat ze op dat moment doen. Hij sprak van een ‘wandering mind’. In het onderzoek bleek dat als de aandacht wel gericht was op wat men deed, de deelnemers aan het onderzoek productiever en gelukkiger waren in vergelijking tot de beleving van de ‘wandering mind’.
