Fall 2017 Free Electives

                      Social Work & Development (SW&D)

Module: Family Violence
The course provides insights about family violence in the social work profession. Three areas of family violence are examined: child abuse and neglect; intimate partner violence and elder abuse. Other related topics addressed include children who witnessed family violence and teen dating violence.. Students explore the associated emotional and behavioural indicators, signs, symptons assessment procedures and risk-assessment instruments of the various forms of family violence. While not a type of family violence, sexual harassment in the workplace is explored. The course also explores the services and programs available in Aruba to assist victims and perpetrators of the varied forms  of family violence. The knowledge to be gained in this course will provide students with the competencies required to work both at the prevention and intervention level. Moreover, it will raise personal awareness of family violence in one's own lives.
