Historically, a place where the art of conversation thrived was the salon. Usually associated with seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French literary and philosophical movements, salons took place in urban settings until as recently as the 1940s. Grounded in respect for the inherent power of communication, these small gatherings were often hosted and moderated by women, who would also choose the topic of conversation. As simple as salons appeared, they had a profound effect on the evolving societies around them.
