Fall 2017 Free Electives

                      Social Work & Development (SW&D)

Module: Social Work with Persons with disabilities
More than 7000 people on Aruba have a disability, amongst others due to the aging population this amount is growing. This module will focus on the complexities of living with a disability or chronic disease; it is layered and varies in dynamics per person and situation. Students will get acquainted with the most significant concepts and perspectives within the field of disability studies. Through this module, students become aware of the various impairments, activity limitations, participation restrictions, and the needed focus on the interaction between a person (with a health condition) and contextual factors (environmental and personal). The role of the social worker and other professionals will be discussed and how they can provide assistance and contribute to the empowerment of persons with a disability.

This course will also give students information about the social services provided in Aruba by the different agencies. The course is particularly concerned with extending student’s ability to make an intervention or service plan for a person with a disability and to design a policy, plan, or activity in the interest of persons with disabilities. This course is therefore recommended for social workers, policy makers, (HRM)managers, and other persons that like to contribute to the wellbeing of persons with disabilities.
