Linda Loaiza López was only 18 when she was kidnapped, raped and tortured in Venezuela. Throughout a David-and-Goliath-like quest for justice against her politically connected abductor, Linda persevered, becoming an activist and a human rights lawyer. Nearly 17 years later, her haunting case made it all the way to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in 2018, as one of the first to examine a State’s responsibility for torture at the hands of a private citizen. Setting a legal precedent with implications for victims worldwide, the Court found the State of Venezuela responsible for torture and sexual slavery, as well as for failing to prevent, investigate or punish Linda’s perpetrator.

Linda’s is a timely and powerful #MeToo survivor’s story, with implications for women everywhere. Journalist and University of Aruba lecturer Jen Ross will introduce her story. Linda Loaiza herself will join the lecture via video conference and take questions from the audience, as well as from a panel of local experts. Discussants will include representatives of Fundacion Hende Muhe den Dificultad (Suzette Kock), the Aruba Bar Association (Lianne Pieters), and the University of Aruba’s Faculty of Law (Ryçond Santos do Nascimento), who will offer a range of insights into the causes and consequences of Linda’s ordeal and ultimate victory, and what it means for Aruba.

The event is purposely timed during the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women, which runs from 25 November until Human Rights Day on 10 December. During this period, the University will be lit in orange in commemoration of the 16 Days.

This public lecture is a bilingual event (Spanish/English), organized by the University of Aruba (Social Work and Development Program, Faculty of Law and the Center for Lifelong Learning) in collaboration with Fundacion Hende Muhe den Dificultad.
