Angela’s Missie
Op donderdag 11 maart wordt in de aula van de Universiteit van Aruba de film
Angela’s missie vertoond. De film wordt ingeleid door Agim Veselaj (research en
idee), Marc Schmidt (regisseur) en Judith Vreriks (executive producer). Na de
filmvertoning is er mogelijkheid tot discussie.
Strafrechter Angela Kaptein onderbreekt haar carrière in Nederland om voor
EULEX naar Mitrovica in Kosovo te gaan. Deze grootste civiele EU-missie ooit
werkt hier aan de opbouw van de democratische rechtsorde.
De idealen van de Nederlandse rechter worden danig op de proef gesteld. Zijn
onze westerse waarden toereikend om daadwerkelijk verandering teweeg te
brengen?
In Angela’s Missie wordt de vraag opgeroepen hoe onze westerse waarden zich
verhouden tot locale structuren en tradities. Is ons streven naar export van deze
waarden naar allerlei windstreken reëel ?

The University of Aruba, as part of its international academic and research cooperation and embedment,
invites you to an international presentation on:
TRENDS IN CARIBBEAN RESEARCH AND THE ROLE OF PHD RESEARCH
The following speakers will elaborate aspects of the theme:
- Dr. Lydia Emerencia, Rector of the University, will elaborate on capacity building as part of the Strategic Plan of the University of Aruba
- Dr. Cees Hamelink, Professor at the University of Amsterdam and Director of the PhD Research School of the University of Aruba will elaborate on the ongoing PhD Program of the University of Aruba
- Dr. Aaron Gamaliel Ramos, Professor at the University of Puerto Rico and former Director of the Institute of Caribbean Studies (Puerto Rico) will focus on the Spanish and French-speaking Caribbean
- Dr. Brian Meeks, Professor and Director of SALISES, Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (University of the West Indies), will focus on the English-speaking Caribbean.

Bedreigende of dienstbare technologie
Lange tijd hebben we alleen maar gedacht dat de technologie de kwaliteit van het
menselijk bestaan verrijkte. In onze tijd dreigt het omgekeerde steeds meer waar te
worden. Hebben we onszelf meer technische macht toegeëigend dan we aan
kunnen?
Een verantwoorde ethiek van de technologie moet het mensenleven en de
samenleving dienen, de planten en dieren beschermen en het levensmilieu schoon
houden. Het materialistisch cultuurparadigma moet worden vervangen door een
andere cultuurbenadering. Welke?
