  • College Caribisch Recht aan de Universiteit van Aruba

    De Universiteit van Aruba heeft vandaag hare koninklijke hoogheid prinses Amalia mogen ontvangen tijdens haar bezoek aan Aruba. Door de juridische faculteit werd een college verzorgd over actuele rechtspraak van het Gemeenschappelijk Hof in Curaçao en het Statuut van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Vol overtuiging legden docenten mr. Miranda Gielen en mr. dr. Chun Luk uit wat het concordantiebeginsel inhield. De daaruit voortvloeiende samenwerking binnen het Koninkrijk stond voorop, hetgeen de Koning achteraf benadrukte. Ook de Staatssecretaris van Koninkrijksrelaties en Digitalisering mw. Van Huffelen heeft met belangstelling kennis genomen van het concordantiebeginsel en dat dit onderwerp de aandacht heeft van zowel de Koning als de Staatssecretaris. De eigenheid van de eilanden werd, voorzien van wetteksten, nader uitgelegd aan de Prinses, die vol enthousiasme deelnam aan de Kahoot. Het tweede onderdeel van het programma bestond uit de kennismaking met studenten en docenten van de andere opleidingen zoals: Hospitality & Tourism & Management (FHTMS), de Faculty of Arts & Sciences (FAS), SISSTEM, het programma Social Work en de UA FEF/Business school. Ten slotte vertelden de studenten van het Academic Foundation Year (AFY) de mogelijkheid om over hun studie te vertellen aan de prinses, en haar ouders. De rector van de Universiteit van Aruba, prof. Viola Heutger wees de Prinses en de Koning op het Koninkrijks mobiliteitsprogramma en nodigde de prinses uit om actief deel te nemen aan deze uitwisseling.

  • NIAS Fellow Dr. Eric Mijts is back on Aruba

    The return of Dr. Eric Mijts to the Island and University of Aruba after a 5-month fellowship at NIAS in Amsterdam is filled with pride and anticipation of the things to come. It is quite an honor to be invited to a fellowship at NIAS and the University of Aruba(UA) is celebrating the fact that one of its own was chosen. Lessons learned and experiences gained from this fellowship will surely help Eric in his next purpose of setting up the UA’s Research Center, but not before he shares some of the outcomes of his time at NIAS. Dr. Eric Mijts was awarded a fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences. From September 2022 until January 2023, Eric Mijts studied Climate Change and the Governance of Tropical Marine Conservation, together with colleagues from different institutes in the Netherlands and Indonesia in a dedicated NIOO-KITLV-NIAS theme group.

    Minister Dijkgraaf and his delegation were welcomed by Aruba Minister of Education and Sports Endy Croes and member of the Board of Trustees of the University Angelo Brete. Rector of University of Aruba, prof. dr. Viola Heutger led a tour around the premises and officially welcomed the dignitary during the presentation in. the aula. Dr. Heuger in her welcome address said many do not know that research in Aruba dated since the early 17th century with a study on hummingbirds. Noting the importance of this collaborative study in which it was determined Aruba was home to the smallest species of the hummingbird, dr. Heutger emphasized the value of research for the development of the university, its academia, students and community as a whole. For research to flourish though, collaboration is essential as was the case in the hummingbird study.

  • Tracy van der Biezen first graduate of the UA Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Island Solutions through STEM (SISSTEM)

    On Monday July 11, 2022, Tracy van der Biezen has successfully defended her thesis and has obtained the title Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Engineering and Technology with a specialization in Bio-environmental Sciences. Tracy defended her thesis in front of a graduation committee consisting of ms. Alba de Agustin, dr. Lies Jacobs and dr. Nigel John. Present at the defense were the prime minister of Aruba, ms. Evelyna Wever-Croes, vice-dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences dr. Eric Mijts, family of Tracy, invited guests and staff of the University of Aruba.
